Hi, I'm ashley.

Today I want to talk about the importance of outfits and the best part is, this can be applied to seasonal mini sessions, family portraits, an upcoming engagement session, or really any future photo session 🙂 Here’s some of my favorite tips:

Choose a color palette:

Choosing colors that go together is a great place to start. I take this to Pinterest for inspiration all the time. Colors that photograph beautifully, neutrals such as creams, tans, black, and white. Earth tones, greens, browns, muted or rusty oranges, yellows and burgundy. Soft pastels also look great on camera, such as blues, lavender, blush and sage.

What to avoid:

Extreme matching, such as everyone in the 90s white button-ups and blue jeans (unless that’s the look you are intentionally going for). Avoid clashing patterns like stripes and florals. As surprising as it may sound, this actually can work and look really good if it’s subtle and in groups of 4 or more so you have some color blocking breaking up the patterns.

Footwear & accessories:

If one of you is in heels, there shouldn’t be someone in beat-up sneakers or flip-flops. Or if one of you has a puff vest on, the other should be dressed for similar weather, like in a sweater. You want to look unified like you are attending the same event.

What to aim for:

Coordinating, not matching. Choose outfits, patterns and textures that complement each other. Put them all next to each other to check. Once you have your outfits chosen, send them to me or your photographer. I am happy to weigh in and provide feedback.
