When you own your own business, having a clear point of view can elevate your business to a whole other level. Consistency across social media, branding, and services sets the tone for your clients and can help generate even more client traffic. I mean, admit it, don’t you love when you stumble upon a thoughtfully curated Instagram page? Before a branding shoot, I supply my clients with a branding guide and prompts to hone what inspires them and what vibe they wish to create. While I am always happy to help with the process, it is fantastic to work with someone who already has an established stylistic inspiration.
Megan Henderson, lash artist and owner of Mod Dolly Lash, knows precisely what, or rather who, her branding inspiration is; “Twiggy, the cultural icon of the swinging-sixties, who’s mod, doe-eyed look defined the fashion industry during much of the 20th century.”
Megan’s lash boutique in downtown Chico was the location of her branding shoot. The Mod Dolly studio space, designed and styled by Shannon McConnery, owner of The Design Renegade, reflects the bright color palette and free-spirited nature of Twiggy’s time. For her session, Megan secured four lash models, all of whom dressed in on-brand retro mod attire, to showcase her process and lash work. Megan also booked a professional makeup artist to style both her and the lash models. I always recommend my branding clients have their makeup (and hair too, if possible!) professionally done for the shoot. It adds a layer of confidence during their session, photographs beautifully, and increases their images’ value.
The goal of each of my branding sessions is to get as many looks and subject changes as possible to extend my client’s photos’ life and longevity. The content we are generating is typically for social media marketing and webpage design purposes, so it is vital that the tone and palette are consistent and that there are many images created for my clients to utilize. Megan and I worked together to create a mood board and shot list for her session. We split the shoot into two days.
On day one, I focused on taking photos of the Mod Dolly studio, highlighting the styled elements that showcase Megan’s brand and perspective. I also photographed the products that Mod Dolly stocks, such as foaming cleanser, eyelash cleaner, and lash growth serum. Then, it was time to turn the camera on Megan to showcase her and her work. We took headshots and featured her applying a lash lift to her model Maya. I made sure to capture close photos of the final look and the natural look Megan’s lash lift created.
Day two was all about Megan’s main service; Lash Extensions! Megan had a makeup artist from Glow Beauty (also named Megan!) come to style three models and Megan herself. I photographed Megan applying different types of lash sets to each of the models; Simone received a Volume Set, Maylani had a Classic Set, and Rose received a Hybrid Lash Set. Once Megan finished applying the model’s lash designs, we used Mod Dolly’s retro space to capture the models with various props and showcase their lash extensions. After photographing the models indoors, I took them to Downtown Chico locations with textured and colored backgrounds that tied into the session’s vibe.
Before her branding shoot, Megan told me that a more subtle takeaway from her inspirational muse Twiggy’s look is “that eyelashes are actually capable of pulling a whole lot of weight.” Mod Dolly’s branding session truly was a testament to that statement. By showcasing Megan’s stunning lash work and 60’s inspired studio space, we created an expansive catalog of imagery. Megan capitalized on the talents and service of other women-owned businesses such as The Design Renegade, Glow Beauty, and her four lash models to catapult her branding session to the next level. Thanks to Mod Dolly’s consistent styling and the branding images we captured, Megan will be able to clearly communicate her services, products, and unique point of view to her current and prospective clients.
