One of my favorite things about photographing weddings in Northern California is how couples are making their day feel more them. Lately, I’ve been seeing so many creative, untraditional choices that bring more meaning, ease, and personality to wedding days — and I’m really hoping these ideas stick around.
Wedding Party Sitting Instead of Standing:
Instead of having the wedding party stand up front during the ceremony, some couples are opting to seat them in a reserved front row — and it creates such a peaceful, intimate vibe. You still get to honor your closest people, but all eyes stay on you and your partner.
Coffee or Breakfast Together the Morning Of:
Starting the day with a quiet moment — just the two of you, maybe with coffee or breakfast — is such a grounding way to begin. It slows everything down before the excitement kicks in, and it’s a sweet memory you’ll always carry with you.
Bridal Looks with Bold Details & Color:
I’ll never stop loving a nontraditional bridal look. Whether it’s a patterned dress, an embroidered veil, or a little pop of color somewhere unexpected, it’s the perfect way to bring personality into your day and make your look truly your own.
Full Weekend Wedding Experiences:
I’ve been seeing more couples turn their wedding into a full weekend celebration, and it makes everything feel that much more special. Think welcome dinners, farewell brunches, or a fun group outing — it gives guests a chance to really connect and soak it all in.
Choreographed First Dances:
When a couple takes the time to plan their first dance — even just a little — the energy is incredible. Everyone watches, the reactions are big, and the photos are always full of emotion. It doesn’t have to be a performance, just a little extra thought makes it feel so intentional.
Audio Guest Books:
This one is such a vibe. Instead of a traditional guest book, guests can leave you voice messages — everything from heartfelt advice to hilarious stories. Listening back later is pure gold, and it captures personality in such a unique way.
Thoughtful Guest Experiences:
Couples are getting so creative with how they treat their guests — signature drinks, interactive seating charts, handwritten notes, unique entertainment. These little touches turn the day into a whole experience, and guests feel that extra love.
Wedding Reception Outfit Changes:
Whether it’s a sparkly mini dress, a chic jumpsuit, or something with serious movement for the dance floor, a second look is always a good idea. It gives your reception a fresh burst of energy — and it’s so fun to photograph.
I love when couples feel free to ditch the expected and lean into what actually feels right for them. So if you’re planning a wedding and thinking of doing things a little differently — trust that gut. I’m always here for the untraditional, the intentional, and the moments that make your day completely, uniquely yours.
