Hi, I'm ashley.

It’s possible you’ve heard this story. If not, here’s the TL;DR: A bride hired a photographer known for a warm, golden editing style. A year later, after her wedding, she received her photos and no longer liked that editing style, so she didn’t like her photos. She took to TikTok to share her experience, it went viral, and the rest is history.

You might infer what I think of the situation, but I’ll leave it there because “Sepia Gate” is not the main focus of this email. However, there’s a lesson here that is worth discussing.

Different Editing Styles vs. Shooting Styles

Editing Style:

This involves the post-processing work on your photos. It includes tweaking highlights, shadows, colors, contrast, etc., on the computer after the session. Editing styles vary widely, but classic references include: Dark and moody, warm and golden, true to color, light and airy. Clients and other photographers often refer to my work as light and airy, but I consider it to be more true to color. There’s no right or wrong way; it’s all about individual perception.

Shooting Style:

This refers to how a photographer captures their subject during the session. Common references are: Journalistic, classic/traditional posing, candid, artistic. Anyone who has worked with me knows that I incorporate a little of all these styles for a variety in your gallery. If I had to choose one, I’d label myself as mostly candid with direction. Some photographers heavily lean into one style but often pull from all of them.

CHOOSING WHAT IS BEST FOR YOU

Wedding and family photos are something you’ll live with forever. So, trust your gut and choose the style you feel you’ll love forever.

Important Things to Consider:

– What fits your personality?

– What are your communication preferences?

– What will look good in your home?

TIP: Before going with a photographer, ask to see 2-3 full galleries of the service you are looking for. Look through all the photos, and check out the posing, attention to detail, and consistency in editing.

If you’ve made it this far, wow, you are amazing. I hope these tips help you stay informed when choosing a photography style.
